CO Detectors Save Lives

Over the past few weeks in Penfield on two separate occasions CO detectors have alerted two separate families to CO problems in there houses. At both locations CO levels were just starting to rise due to furnace problems pushing CO back into the house. At both incidents both families evacuated there houses and waited outside for help to respond which is the right thing to do, wait outside in the fresh air. Each family was lucky to have fully functioning CO detectors which caught the problems just as they started. Without an alarm or other notification had levels increased do to continued equipment failure and exposures times increased it could have ended much differently. Excellent reacting on behalf of both families for recognizing the alarm and the potently hazards associated with CO. They did the right thing by evacuating a hazardous environment and waiting for help to arrive.

Reminder - Carbon Monoxide is an odorless and tasteless gas.
CO Detectors only last 5 years. Change out your detectors every 5 years per the manufacture. There should be on detector located in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms per NFPA 720

When a CO detector activates don't take any chances, dial 911 and get out and stay out.
Let the fire department and RGE take air samples to make sure the air quality is at a safe level for you and your family.
