2012 Totals and Review

The fire company ended 2012 with exactly 800 emergency calls for the year.  In addition to the 800 calls there were also 55 activities including 34 drills, 5 parades, several stand-bys, and funerals details through out the year.
Through 2012 there were two major structure fires, one in January and one in December, several fatal car accidents including a woman struck and killed by a large vehicle on a private drive.  There were 3 snow storms that hit the area, one on 13th January, April 23rd, and finally December 26th.  Hurricane Sandy hit the area on October 30th with 55mph winds out of the north east changing the landscape at Five Mile Line and Whalen forever and leaving several 1000's in Penfield without power for days.  The wind would also howl on January 17th at 72mph and March 3rd at 66mph.  A large brush fire would race out of control on Gloria Dr. in July just as the brand new Grass Fire 376 went into service.  A rare and unusual construction accident which town employees were hurt and a late July night search for a woman, son, and pet that was lost in the Lucien Moren park.
The obvious memory of 2012 which will stay with the fire service for years to come is the tragic out come of the 4 West Webster firefighters who were shot while responding to a fire, leaving two dead and 2 severally injured.  Who would have ever thought this possible?

This years overall total of 855 combined calls and activities is average for Penfield.  Statistics over the last 15 years usually end up someplace between 800 and 900.
